Mom's Gorgeous Painted Countertops

Today I bring to you my very own mother's painted kitchen counter tops.  She totally owes me for this one. ;) You see, I first came across this idea from a blogger who I have a mutual cousin with, Peter Marie.  I asked her what she used, and the rest is history.  I remember when I called my mom about the idea, and one day while she was visiting me, we set to work (oh mine, not her's).  NOW, I must tell you this.  My mom had been looking into replacing her kitchen counters.  Before we started mine, she said "Kammy, that's okay for your old farmhouse.  But our house is... newer, and well... painted countertops just wouldn't quite cut it...."  Hmph!!!  Boy was she wrong!!!!  After seeing mine, she changed her mind and decided to paint her own!!  (Saved hundreds - possibly THOUSANDS of dollars!!)  Here's how they looked before:
Notice the old hardware too!  I ordered her new pulls off of Ebay.  TRUST ME ON THIS: Ebay is the best place to purchase a large quantity of pulls and knobs!!!  Probably pay about 75% less than you would at say Lowes or Menards.  (And yes, that's my beautiful mama.  She didn't take a before pic so I had to do some digging!)
After!
Oooooooo Ahhhhhhhh, such a better look, eh?  Even more so since it cost under $100!!!

She bought three colors of Rustoleum Counter Top Coating, and from those three, mixed two other colors, for five in all.  After painting the base coat, she sponged them on top of each other, just kept layering the colors on for depth.  She finished up by putting two coats of polyacrylic on top.
I'ts been OVER A YEAR and this is how they look today!  Just as good as the day she did them!!!

Yes, she's also a talented artist.  She painted that picture, Can you believe it?  Yeah, I'm jealous.  But I also don't have the patience for her to teach me - although she wants to make me her student in the worst way!  haha. :)

Be sure to come back tonight and link up YOUR trash to treasure projects on Kammy's Korner!!

Happy Monday to you!!!!!

  8. Great job! I painted the laminate rails on our old pool table to look like stained mahogany. I used Zinsser Bullseye primer as a base. Then I painted on a coat of dark red latex paint. After that I brushed on a coat of mahogany stain so it looked like wood grain. I topped it off with a couple of coats of polyurethane. It has been a few years and hasn't had one chip yet! I haven't heard of Rustoleum's countertop product. I'm anxious to try it out. Thanks for the inspiration!

  13. Would love to do this but have a couple questions. Do you have to take out the sink and stove top when refinishing? Do hot pans damage the new counter top? Can you use a knife on refinished tops or do I still have to use a cutting board for everything?
