The Upcylced Ugly Ducklings

Aren't these GORGEOUS?!!!  I thought so!  That's why I bought 'em!  Duh!  I mean Ducks, blue ribbons on apples, chippy wood, hey... gotta have it!  Well, even though I loved the little ducks (I'm never sarcastic), I decided a little chalk board in place of the ducky scene would be more practical.
In case you don't know yet, to make your own chalkboard paint for a fraction of the price, you just add about 2 tablespoons Plaster of Paris to 1 cup of flat black paint.  Pretty simple!
Then I painted the canisters an icy light blue I got free from a sample giveaway Valspar was doing on icravefreebies.com.  What?  You don't check out www.icravefreebies.com on a regular basis?  Now would be a good time to start!  Oh, and I also added a little plaster of paris to that paint too.  I love how it covers. Then I did some sanding to distress it, and I spray painted the knobs on the lids hammered silver.

Would anyone ever know that little duckies once quacked away behind those little labels??

  6. Kammy,

Hi, just found you over at I Heart Naptime. The tired canisters look very nice and I'm glad you posted the makeover.
Just FYI those aren't ducks; they're geese. The pattern is called Marmalade and it was all the rage in the late eighties and early nineties. My mother had done her kitchen in this pattern as best she could with no money. She stenciled peach hearts along the top of the kitchen walls and found plates with similar hearts on them. She found glass canister jars with this pattern on it that she could afford. If the money was available she would have wall papered and had nearly every accessory made with the Marmalade design.
Hope I haven't bored you too much.

  10. I am in love with these! Great job. I'm laughing about the ducks since my BFF and I were just talking about the 80s ducks and asking "what were we thinking?" Thanks for inspiring.

I will no longer scoff at the weird wooden thrift store containers covered in geese!
