I did it. Painted my dark cherry finish bedroom set. Dresser REVEAL!

Good grief.  WHY do we agonize over touching these things with paint so much?!!!  I just KNEW I'd love it painted!  My hubby bought this four piece set right before we were married brand new.  I was so in love with it.  Then.  I've debated over the last few years as to sell it, paint it, live with it....  How about a before?  Of course, get on with it, Kammy!
Behold the before Before.
I thought I had found the perfect solution a couple years ago when I bought all knew hardware for cheap off Ebay and replaced the brassy ones.  In fact, that was my VERY FIRST BLOG POST!  Wow, Kammy's Korner had come a long way, Baby!  I'm embarrassed to even put a link to it!
It wasn't real noticeable at a glance, but it bugged me a little how you could still see the outlines from the old hardware.
This is a very large undertaking for three days, let me tell you.  But with my mom armed and at my side (when she's not falling down the stairs, etc.) we are almost unstoppable.  While I painted furniture, she painted walls.
I dumped a big heap of Plaster of Paris into my ultra white Valspar paint.  Baby did that stuff get THICK.  But it's so much more durable and I like the look of it when distressed.
It dried harder than I thought it would and sanding the edges for distressing took some muscle!  And yup, I just perched right there on top of my dresser!
My mom kept asking me if I was "sure" I wanted to distress.  I did one side just to show her the difference.  She decided it was a good plan after all. :)
My mom is a firm believer in poly.  Pretty sure she gave this baby about 5 coats.  Mom, you're awesome.  I hate that job.

Stay tuned for more of the bedroom reveal!!  Now, I think I'll head up the wooden hill (that's what my hubby calls the stairs, I have NO idea why because they are carpeted) and cozy up in my "new" room for some good dreamin'.  Adios, Kammy's Korner readers!!

  7. That looks great! I had the same debate last year about painting the bedroom set I inherited after my Mom's death. I okay-ed it with my sister, the most sensitive member of the family, and went for it. It looks sooo much better. It feels good after all that agony, right?!! Great job!

  18. It looks great! I am having the same debate about my bedroom furniture. I hesitate to put paint on the wood because it's in such good condition - but I don't like it the way it is! You've inspired me. Thanks. :)
