Charcoal Black Cabinet {Distressed Chalk Paint How To}

First of all, I must tell you that I got my inspiration for this piece from something Sometimes Twice linked up at one of my Trash 2 Treasure Tuesday parties.  Here's what she did that made go "ahhhhh":

Source: Sometimes Twice

A friend texted me awhile back asking if I wanted some furniture that her in-laws were going to put on the curb.  You know the answer to that!

I love how there were a few stories to tell.... :)

I really didn't like the grungy-from-time  knobs.  But I knew they were probably tarnished from years of use, and the beautiful brass that shone after a good scrubbing had me sorry I ever felt any disdain for them.

I also learned today - through the massive amounts of knowledge on Google - that you can tell if it's truly brass by whether or not a magnet will stick to it.  If it does, it is simply brass plated.  But if the magnet will not stick, it's brass.  These were true brass!

Here's how I painted and distressed this piece with homemade chalk paint:

1. Using a Cool Whip container, I dissolved about 1/2 a cup of Plaster of Paris in about a cup of water.
I never measure, as it doesn't need to be accurate.
2. Added about 1 1/2 cups of black latex paint to the mixture, and then also a spoonful of creamy taupe to give it more of a charcoal black color.
3. Rolled on two coats with a foam roller.
4. Used sandpaper to distress all of the edges, then lightly sanded over the whole piece as the DIY chalk paint will make it very rough to the touch.
5. Wiped the whole thing down really well with a wet wash cloth.
6. Gave it a coat of satin finish polyurethane.

I rarely pay attention to the inside of pieces, so I decided I needed to step it up in that area of furniture refinishing and found some leftovers from my basement curtains.  Using a glue/water mixture that I "painted" onto the wood, I placed the cut and measured fabric pieces into the drawer and bottom of the cabinet.

The stencil I used on the front of the doors is from Hobby Lobby.

My Vintage Owl Cookie Jar is waiting for someone to buy him in my Etsy Shop. :)

Trash 2 Treasure Tuesday Linky Party

Happy Trash 2 Treasure!

We are all a little gloomy about the weather here in Michigan this week,
but the tragedy from the lives lost in the tornadoes yesterday - mainly in Arkansas - leaves us here in Michigan much to be grateful for.  So sorry for all those affected - you are in our prayers!

Spring is a time to refresh the old stale rooms in our house.
Sometimes just getting new curtains in the living room, or a pretty new throw pillow for our bed is enough to refresh without breaking the budget!

It's hard to find what you like.  But have you ever checked out Jan's beautiful work from Sew Panache?  For quality at a reasonable price, get exactly what you want!  Here are some of her fabric selections that she can specify to your measurements.  Shower curtains, drapes, decorative pillows - she will do it!

If you took something and made it look better and it's NEW to Kammy's Korner - link it up, Baby! :)

2. Place the Party button found on the right sidebar on the post or somewhere on your blog.

3. Visit the link before you and leave a comment!

I do try to visit each and every one of them eventually!!!  It's hard with three little munchkins who need attention and hate mommy's computer time. :)

Link up, Buttercup!

Creative Photo Displays {Kammy's Korner Round Up)

I haven't done a round up in quite awhile, and am right in the middle of some projects so I have done some digging into the archives on Kammy's Korner to try and come up with a "photo list" of different ways I've displayed photos in my home.

Just click on the photo to take you to the original post.

Hope you can glean a few ideas!
