Use a Paint Pen to Stencil a Cheap Outdoor Rug

You know how stores will have some crazy-cheap item to get you in to their store?  Well, last fall, I took Menard's bait and had to buy a rug they were advertising for $3 (I think, if my memory serves me correctly?)  Yeah, it was super thin, and really.... not special. Plain black with some gray threading and just something to wipe your paws on.  My word, I'd already spent a fortune on rugs in the house and couldn't handle a dime more.  SO, this yawner has been sitting in front of my door greeting sweet visitors for months.  I finally decided to shop for one.  Nope, nothing.  Nothing was thin enough for my door to glide over, cute enough, in my budget, etc. So I decided to do what I usually do.  Upgrade what I have!

I used one of my Cutting Edge Stencils, the first one I ever got from them several years ago (a gift to me in exchange for a product review).  This is the Allover Oasis design.  But rather than painting it the normal way, I decided to just outline it with a white paint pen.

Paint pens (paint marker) are one of my favorite crafting tools.  You shake them like a can of spray paint, until you hear the little ball rattling up and down and then you press the tip down until paint starts to flow.  Then you just use it like you would a marker!  For this, I had to go back and forth quite a bit so the paint really showed up, more like a crayon.  Since the rug soaks up a little of the paint, the pattern does not scream at you, but is a little more on the subtle side.  It is perfect though!

And the best part of it was, that my friend from Chicago was visiting that afternoon and she plopped her cute preggo self down on the ground with me and we each had a painter marker in hand and chatted while we worked.  Seriously, I had JUST blogged a couple of weeks ago about how my favorite thing is creating but if I got to do it while having a "chin wag" with one of my favorite encouraging peeps (namely Maran) that it would be almost Utopia.  And BAM - dreams really do come true!!  Haha.  (that post was 10 awesome, easy salvaged wood signs that you can see HERE).

  6. I can already feel the paint pen in my hand! Just have to wait until that big yellow bus picks up my sweeties. Thanks for the idea!

Side note: On first sight of the finished rug (on the small screen of my phone) it appeared as though you had stenciled some bright blue shoes on there too. I might try some flip flops on the rug for the camper :)
