Piano Stool to Plant Stand {Shabby Chic}

When did musicians make the switch from piano stools to piano benches, anyway? 

Maybe when fast food hit the fan?  The more Big Macs the more rear end?  No longer able to perch atop that tiny round little seat?  Perhaps someone didn't make the switch in time, had too many Big Macs and hence this broken top?  Dunno!  I think I'll go for a run today!

Ran in to the Jackson Antique Mall with my pal Maran awhile back, and fifteen minutes is NOT enough time for that mall!  But that's about all we had so I did a quick scan and saw this busted piano stool with the top detached for only $5.

When I brought it up to the counter to pay the oldish dude says, "You buyin' this for firewood?"

Now is that any way to sell treasures in your store?!

I took the busted top off, and painted the beatuiful bottom white and then distressed it with sandpaper.  You can't tell from this photo, but all sorts of greens, blues, and blacks from paint jobs of years gone by peeked through.  Such a lovely shabby chic finish when you get different colors 

And.... here's the detached top!  Now a beautiful wall accent piece, hung with jute rope.

I used a foam roller, white paint, and the Prosperity Mandala Stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils.  I have the 24" stencil, which was a lot larger than the seat, so the edges hung off.  No matter.

Eight Repurposed Drawer Ideas

Sometimes you just gotta junk the dresser.  Or nightstand.  But sometimes there's no need to junk the drawers or leave them homeless!  

I know there are so many cute ideas out there, like putting legs under them and turning them into planters, or one of my personal favorites - castors and a cushion for a cute footstool (though I've still never done it myself).

Here are eight different ways I've personally repurposed a drawer - or parts of the drawer!

1. Farmhouse decor

This was at our previous house and worked well because we didn't have carpet.  I attached castors to the bottom of the drawers so they could roll out.

Upholstered Bench, Stick Signage, And A Sharpie Pillow

This past Christmas, we headed to Iowa to chill with my side of the family. 

And when I'm out there, I always gotta hit up their huge Goodwill! 

It's a fantastic one, probably because Cedar Falls is a classy town so the donors are classy people, donating classy items for us classy-wannabees.  

I picked up some great stuff, including this upholstered bench!  The fabric was real roughed up on one side, but other than that it was in great shape.  Our van was PACKED on the way home and I had to convince Hubby that if we flipped it upside down, all the skiis and poles could lay right across it.  (All those skis and poles and ski boots that traveled 1,000 miles and NEVER TOUCHED THE SNOW!  AHHHHH!  What can I say?  I'm not the same girl who called all her friends when school got canceled for extreme cold weather to go hit the slopes.  What?  No school?  Let's go skiing!!! Nope, if the actual temp is less than zero now, I ain't gone-do-it!)

So this next picture is one I shared a few weeks ago, showing how I was covering up that big mirrored wall with a huge canvas photo.  And someone commented on my Facebook page:

  "I like it with the picture better. How about some type of bench across from it?

So, see?  Sometimes I really do listen to your suggestions!  Maybe not 98% of them, but there's always that 2%...

Tada!  You were right, Carolyn!  It needed a bench!

The fabric was on clearance at Hobby Lobby.  Another store I have to visit while in Iowa!  We have some in Michigan, but definitely not close enough for my hermitish self.  I totally guessed on how much I needed, since I forgot to measure, and didn't have an inch to spare in length!  Phew!  BUT, it was a wide cut, so I had enough to do a pillow!  Maybe two! :)

So funny thing is, we got home from Iowa at midnight after being gone ten days.  The next morning I didn't unpack, I didn't go get groceries, I didn't start laundry.... no. I quick recovered the bench! First things first! Haha.

Now how 'bout that "HOME" sign on the wall above it?

One day my crazy creative friend Marie texts me and says she saw this idea and Pinterest and to put the coffee on cuz she comin' over to craft!

First, she tells me, we gotta go out and gather some sticks.  Then we head out to my shop where I got loads of salvaged wood.  Then bring it all back in the house and get to creating.  I also have a plethora of rusty old tools and junk, so I lug some of that up to the table.

Check out our finished products!  So cute, eh?  And didn't cost ANYTHING.

Oh, and guess how we held those twigs on?  Ryobi nail gun.  Yeah, that's right.  

Had to be careful not to split the wood, but shoot.  It's not like it's hard to get another twig if you murder one.   That Ryobi I tell ya... can't live without my battery powered tools.

Okay, and now I gotta tell you about my arrow pillow cuz I recovered an old pillow with some white fabric I had in my hoarded fabric stash and then used a stencil and a black sharpie to get my design.  YES!  I've always wanted to do something other than label freezer baggies with a sharpie.

Repurposed Closet Door... And how I about took out an Airbnb Guest With It!

There was a very scary mudroom in the tenant house on our property.

We decided the room would thank us if we busted this closet out of there!

It had two very heavy wooden sliding doors, one of which was already removed in these photos and probably heading for the burn pile when I intervened cuz ya know... #repurposeeverything....

The wheels would be kept on and put to use, as well as the handles. :)

Thanks to Ryobi's battery powered saw with a laser beam, cutting this bad boy up was pretty simple!

Ryobi, are you paying attention?  

You follow me on my lowly  Instagram account, which makes me giddy, but when do I start getting sponsored? ;)

So here's what one chunk turned into:

A towel holder! Black chalkboard paint, distressed, and the words WASH, RINSE, DRY.

For this handle, I used a gold oil-based paint that I've literally had for 16 years, and I still use it.  In fact, it's just a little half pint and it's not even half gone!  A little goes a long way.

Now THIS sign, could have cost me dearly.  Like DEARLY.  Let me tell you the story....

I painted the scripture text found in Matthew 11: 28 "Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."  Seemed pretty fitting to hang over the bed in our newly listed Airbnb!  I was excited for something nice and big because the bed didn't have a headboard.  The problem was.....  I used jute rope that was WAY TOO THIN!!!!  I mean, how was I  to know that the skinny nail I hung it on was going to act like a little knife on the rope?  Seriously. I can be such a brainless idiot some days.

So it was my second group of guests ever staying in our airbnb next door when I get a text from the woman that the sign over the bed had come crashing down because the rope broke during the day.  THANK HEAVENS IT WASN'T AT NIGHT WHILE THEY WERE DREAMING OF SUGAR PLUM FAIRIES!!!!  I think it could have done some brain damage!  Can we say, lawsuit?  Worst nightmare.  Thankfully, the only damage was some scraped paint off the wall. When we first opened our Airbnb, I would get soooo nervous about things not being just right!!  So this kind of put me in panic mode!

After taking a couple of weeks to recover from the terror of the "what if's" going through my brain, I redid it with a much more heavy duty thick rope.  The castors that the closet door slid on were perfect for the rope to wrap around.  Just make sure the rope is STURDY!  And just in case, let's hang it somewhere other than over the bed.  It got moved to the couch.  At least they would be conscious if it fell again.

My precious Taffy kitty cat who is now in kitty heaven... always posed so beautifully for me. (Or was just always in the way of my photo shoots....) :)

So about a month later, a family was staying in our airbnb when I got a text asking if I could paint a sign for them just like the one above, but using the verse  "But those who wait on the Lord will find new strength.  Isaiah 40:31"... and could I please put an eagle on it. The issue was, I received this text fairly late in the evening and they were leaving in the morning.  They really didn't want to pay for shipping...  Well low and behold, I had the other hunk of door cut, with castor rollers still attached, and painted black just waiting for me to paint a sign on!  So at about midnight I finished it, and brought it over as they were packing up their van the next morning.  Thankfully they loved it (or they pretended really well) and were super appreciative of me being willing to do it on the fly.

Almost everything decorating the Airbnb next door is for sale, and the original one eventually sold too.

So, I still actually have a few chunks of this closet door left, including another piece with a handle, and I'm waiting for motivation plus inspiration to strike.  And you never know how long that might take....
