Piano Vignette {Antique Window}

Okay, so time to confess.

  I ain't never heard the word "vignette" in my life, until I started blogging and then got comments like "Oh, that is a lovely vignette".  Of course I did what every young twenty-first century girl would do.  I googled it.  And now I feel like my friend Maran, using words like "Vignette" in blog post titles and on the phone with my highly educated brother.  Oh wait, I don't use it verbally, since I'm only 90% sure of the pronunciation. 

 And I wouldn't want ya'll to think I sounded like a 

hick wanna-be designer!

The top of my piano has always been one of those areas where

 "Oh, I got this cool vase at a garage sale.  No clue where to put it though...

 I'll just stick in on the piano for now". 

 And then every time my mom comes to visit from Iowa she rearranges it.  But guess what?!  I think I actually have a keeper "vignette".

It begins with these windows I got for five buckaroos at the no-longer-existing Jackson Resale Factory.  Sniff, sniff.  I miss you guys.

I just painted the sign the other day, since I had the paint on my brush from a dresser I just finished, and the acorn wreath I made last fall when my kids were filling buckets of nuts from off the driveway.  The rest is a hodge podge of flea market and garage sale finds.  Oh, the stick swag... well that just came about after a windy day and before I mowed the lawn. :)

I ruined it! But now it's a beautiful chalkboard window.

Pretty much every time I get some chalkboard paint on my brush, I run around the house looking for anything else I might be able to turn in to a chalkboard.  I mean hey, while the paint is out and all, might as well shoot the whole flock of geese flying over.  My eyes landed on this window.  It's been a source of whimpering and feeling sorry for myself.

Doesn't it look just awful?  I was so proud of it.  I stenciled the words and the flower design on the back (and stenciling words while spelling them backwards isn't the easiest thing for this monster cookie short a few M&M's.  In fact, I got done and the "s's" were backwards and I painstakingly had to razor blade a square of black out and redo them).  Then I spray painted over the entire thing black and BOY was I patting myself on the back for how awesome it was turning out.  Then.  THEN. I sprayed some clear coat over the back and applied some brown paper to seal it.  That's when I turned it over to look at my finished product and let out a heart rending cry of pain.  The clear coat had a bad reaction to the black spray paint. One of them must have wronged the other and has been holding a grudge for a long time so when they met up they just exploded at one another.  That's why it's important folks, that we forgive one another!!!  God forgave us so much, how can we not forgive our fellow man for any wrongs committing against us?  (Hey, I'm preaching to myself here too!).  Anyways, this window has been chillin' on the stair ledge going down to the basement.  I was dreading the thought of trying to scrape it clean and now I'm glad I didn't have to!  Chalkboard paint to the rescue!

I used a stencil from Hobby Lobby in each corner and mmmmm mmmmmm, I love the vintagy feel this ole' chalkboard window is now struttin'!  I brought it to Fabulous Darling to sell, however I think I'll do another one for myself since I have the perfect spot in my kitchen for it!

And for the millionth and one time, I'll repost this picture and my recipe: 2 tablespoons plaster of paris to 1 cup of flat black paint.  Do I measure?  Not a chance.

A very sweet girl rescued a whole stack of these windows from being hauled to the dump by her hubby for me.  Thank you, thank you, Cara from the Sheet Boutique!!!  Since I've discovered my own chalkboard paint recipe, I've been just loving these old windows (see below for recipe).

I also landed a big stash of foam wreaths from a thrift store for 10 cents each!!!!  So while I wasn't into wreaths before, I am now.  I cut strips of fabric from this sweater vest.  Don't raise your eyebrows at me, I did not ever wear that.  I think my mom talked me into it at the Goodwill As Is store because she thought we could do something with the hounds tooth material.  I questioned that after I got it home but it came in handy for this wreath.  I forgot to take a picture, but here's how I wrapped the strips around the wreath from a former project:

Since I had so many small strips, unlike that long continuous one pictured, I used lots of pins and some smidgens of hot glue to adhere it to the foam wreath.  What, that doesn't look like foam to you?  It's not. That's a different wreath. But I forgot to take pictures of this project in process, remember?  Of course you do.  You don't have three wild hoodlums that have turned your mommy brain into mush!  Maybe you do.  How would I know?

Now these flowers were an exciting bargain.  ALWAYS make a beeline for the clearance sections of Hobby Lobby.  No matter how tempting it is start waltzing around all those displays in the middle of each isle filled with delicious eye candy. Someone might just get to the clearance isle a step ahead of you and you'll regret it for the rest of you crafty days.  This huge bunch of purple beauty was 90% off.  You bet!  I think it totaled $1.19.

I pulled the flowers off their stems and hot glued them all around the wreath and then tied a strip of fabric at the top to hang it from the window.

I used double sided mounting tape to adhere the clothes pins to the glass and the words are from vinyl that my friend Phil Sarlo so graciously made for me!  They are awesome, just peel off one side of the paper, stick the word where you want it to go, and peel the top piece off.  Wa la!  Thanks, Phil!!  This here beautiful window is for sale in the darling and fabulous little shop in Brooklyn, Michigan called Fabulous Darling American Made Art, Gifts, and More .  Have you been there?  If you haven't, what on EARTH are you waiting for?!!!

I think I've posted this picture at least 10 times by now on my blog.  But in case you're new to the Korner, the chalkboard panes are painted with my homemade concoction of 2 Tablespoons of Plaster of Paris stirred into 1 cup flat black paint.  (But do I measure?  No.)  Hope you enjoyed the old widow idea!  I love seeing all the windows out there in blog land!!!

Old Window For Ty Paired With Design For Life

The girl I ran around with back in the crazy teen years was Heather Lyn.  Now she has three kids like me, is a creative genuis, and sadly lives 7.5 hours away... :(  But she has great talent and sometimes I get to benefit from that!  Like my blog for example.  You think I know how to make a blog header?  Or a button?  Ummm, negative.  That would be Heather aka Design With Life.  Anyways, she makes these 5x7 art prints and sells them on her etsy shop (Click HERE to visit) for next to nothing - they are so cool!  And very good, thick quality.  Don't want to call it paper, it's almost like cardboard.  Someone help me please, I have mommy brain.  I've had an old window sitting in my garage and I knew I wanted to do something with it for Ty's new room.  Then it dawned on me that these verses would be the perfect thing.  I printed off a 5 x 7 of one of my favorite photos of Ty for one section in the window, and the remaining corners got Heather's scripture art prints.

If anyone knows of a better way to attach things to windows other than two-sided tape, please let me know!  It's not too noticeable, but you can still see it.  But nothing brilliant has entered my little brain, so for now, doubled sided tape it is.

This kid thrives on being the center of attention at our house.  Ya think?  Has to jump in every picture I attempt to take, but wants to make sure the ones he gets in don't just stay on the card but make in onto the blog!  Okay Tobin, you win.  I'll post this one, too!

Marie's Window

Beautiful, isn't it?  Me and Marie.  We got a lot in common.  Ummm... wait a minute.  Should I admit that?  Just kiddin', Marie. :)  One of those is our love for junk, like old windows.  And I covet this one every time I see it.  Ain't it just gorgeous in her Granny Smith Apple Green kitchen?!  And don't ya just love the little white shelf/sconce thingymabobber?  Too darlin'.  Yes, I'm being a cheater and not posting one of my projects.  I'm in the middle of some MASSIVE ones though and will hopefully be able to blog about them soooooooooon!  Toodleooooo.

Old Window Scripture

So maybe I'm just not real talented, but those words were not easy.  Since I wanted it painted on the backside of the glass, this mean writing them backwards!  Not a talent of mine.  The projector helped, but just barely.  I love old windows. :)  Click on the windows label below to see other old window ideas!

Maran's Window

I'm in Chicago where my super creative friend lives and low and behold, look at what adorns this girl's dining room wall!  So same idea as the last window post, but with a little twist.  I like how she can easily update her photos with the clothespins!  Pretty slick, eh?

It's another old window!

Since everyone knows I'm a junk collector, I get everyone's junk.  No complaints here! Well from me anyway.  The Hubby has made a few grunts of disapproval now and then but he has learned to cope quite well with his hoarding wife.  Send up a prayer for him now and then though, will ya?  So last week I inherited this old window from a man who cannot see potential in things like beautiful old windows.  Then again, he won't even let the word casserole into his home so how would you expect him to see the beauty in an old window? Send up a prayer for casserole-hating, non-appreciating-junk-man's wife while you're at it too, kay?  They really are a lovely couple.  Really.  So Here's where the old window ended up.  Looking at it now, I wish I had done all black and white prints, but I'm too lazy to change it now and so this is how it will stay.  Each photo is attached with double sided tape.  Need an old window?  I have plenty!  If you are within driving distance to Parma and I like you, then send me a request at kammyhayes@hotmail.com. 

Patriotic Panes

How happy am I that only one of these old windows in the barn sold from my Craigslist ad last summer.  I've discovered how easy they are to paint on! I use acrylic paint and do the backside the it is protected by the glass.  I was inspired by an old window painted with a flag that my friend bought for her in-laws.  This idea actually stuck in my memory (a rare occasion, folks) and I finally picked up a paint brush and just did it!  Hopefully more to come....

from days gone by...

Our civil war era house got completely renovated before we bought it.  Otherwise, we wouldn't have bought it.  The barn had quite the stash of old doors, windows, woodwork, etc.  I knew some day I'd get an idea and find a little time to do something with this great stash.  Well, after seven years of looking at those doors and no gumption to turn them into the stunning headboards I dreamed of, I posted them on Craigslist for $10 each.  Some sold.  Some sat in the rain and rotted.  However, one day as I rummaged through my grandparents basement, I found some wedding pictures that they were more than willing to let me have.  I decided these old pics would be just the perfect thing for one of those windows.  And here we are.  Please excuse the missing buttons.  I'm aware there is a hunk of glue where buttons once adorned this window, but my sweet hubby hung it on the wall for me, over the stairway and didn't bother to tell me as he hung it that some had the urge to bungee jump, without the rubberband.  I have no way of reaching it to fix this problem, and he has no way of getting the motivation to get it back off.  Humph.
