Dresser Drawer Window Boxes {New And Improved!}

So now that summer is almost over, I'm finally getting around to sharing my dresser drawer window boxes (or planter boxes if you prefer).  Guess you can pin it for next spring. :)  I had the idea last year, and it was a pretty popular post however... my hubby and I were rather hap-hazard about putting them up and well.... before I finished all the steps to make them "weather proof", winter had hit. By the time this spring rolled around, they were a rather pathetic sight. Cheap particle board dresser drawers stand no chance naked in the elements - let alone on the West side of the house! I cringed every time someone came to my door and saw the sagging drawers.

So let's take a look back at what this looked like at the beginning of summer '12.

Nothing inviting about that, huh?

Enter some paint and dresser drawers.........

This idea was put into action last summer long after the flowers had bloomed... so I stuck dried weeds from the ditch in them and painted the steps, all my doors and shutters, and it looked like this:

And now?
Here's what we've upgraded to in the summer of 2013.
Okay, so the flowers were still in their puberty stage when I took these pictures.  I'm just now getting around to this post in late August!

So let's chat a tad bit about the upgrade.  Since screwing nasty particle board drawers to siding wasn't the most brilliant idea I've ever had, I took them down and dismantled the drawers.  The covers of the drawers were actually faux wood plastic.  And imagine my luck when I found these long planter boxes free on the curb on day!!  I took the drawer pulls off of the drawer fronts and screwed them all the way through the planter boxes to hold them in place.  Make sense?  So rather than just the screws going through the drawer to hold the handles on, they are going through the side of the planter box and the drawer.
 Now that I've belabored that point let's move on to the brackets.  Examine the photo below.

 So can you tell from my nice little diagram where they came from??  Yeah... three years ago when my hubby and Dad built our patio pergola, they cut each end of the boards all fancy and had a big stack of the leftover scrap pieces.  Of course I rescued them as they were on the way to the burn pile in the little red Flyer wagon because I knew I'd need them for something someday!

And since I know I'll get asked, the yellow paint I used  is Honey Pot by Valspar Duramax and the blue is Cool Pool, also by Valspar Duramax.

  15. Love Love Love this! I am always so amazed at people's creativity - I am a really good copycat and able to "make things my own" but to get the wheels turning to come of with some wonderful transformation, now that is a challenge! I love this idea, so now I will be on the lookout to pick up drawers to make my own (copycat) version (hope you don't mind!) Great job!! Trisha
