Custom Iowa Girl's Basketball Shirt collab with SHIRTSPACE

Serious question: Does anyone else choose their clothing based on its ability to hold a phone? Let's be honest, we all love pockets. Even a dress that has large pockets is going to win out everytime, even if it's pocketless sister makes you look five pounds lighter. AMIRIGHT? (Since we're being honest, it's not just for holding my phone. It's also for a tissue, a few dollar bills, and duh - my hands). 

I love a comfy crewneck sweatshirt, but hate the fact that they lack that wonderful front pocket! Basically I wanted a hoodie without the darn hood. Why is that so difficult to find?

Sooooo when Shirtspace.com contacted me about doing a promo with anything from their massive selection.... I asked if they had my magical concoction and to my disbelief they did. Why are these not more popular?!

It shipped quickly and I couldn't be more happy with the high quality!

This was extra swell timing because I had been drooling over several Iowa Girl's Hawkeye basketball shirts. Why? Three years ago, my buddy Doug Pederson asked me if I'd heard of Caitlin Clark. I had not. Who watches girl's basketball? Not my boys, that was for sure. And I typically find watching sports on TV a waste of time. But the next year Doug convinced me we would be impressed with this Iowa girl (I was born and raised in Iowa so of course it had a little more pull) and to just watch a game. It goes without saying, I GOT HOOKED! Pretty soon I was following not only Caitlin on the gram but also Gabby Marshal, Hannah Stuelke, Kate Martin, Sydney Affolter and the others. They made me so proud to be from Iowa!!

Caitlin is famous for making her "from the logo" 3 point shots and it was an especially amazing night when we all watched with our jaws dropped and then the room erupting into cheers when she broke the all time record for most points scored by a college athlete by hitting a three from the logo!! Thank you number 22, for bringing attention to girl's basketball and creating great memories! And thank you to local business Corrinne's Creations for helping me design an amazing tribute to the Hawkeye starters and Caitlin Clark on this sweatshirt that I'm so proud to wear!

Another one I painted when my little guy was a crazy hoodlum.

I just used white wall paint mixed with some fabric medium. He wore that thing over and over and over again. And being the type of boy he was (hence the quote "Boy: A noise with dirt on it), it was in the washing machine a LOT. And would you believe I don't think those letters hardly faded?!

Repurposed Vintage Stereo Speakers

You've seen it all, I know!

Well just when I think I've seen it all...  someone sends me something that makes me say "WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?!"

So this might not be one of those "blow you away" makeovers,

but I'm not sure I've seen anyone turn old speakers into nightstands before so let me know if you have!

I started by prying off the front. This one was pretty cool how it popped off and I could unscrew the insides pretty easily.

The taller one had more "guts" to "gut" but the front was just velcroed on so that was extra easy!

Also very easy to recover with fabric, as I just used my hot glue gun and went over top the existing fabric. There was so much insulation stuffed in there, I was pretty sure a mouse was going to scurry out at some point... but one did not. Not even a little mouse turd to be found.

After painting the wood with a dark taupe, I decided to recover the blacks, oranges, and browns of the front. These had such a modern look to them that I had to really dig in my fabric stashes. Past the colorful dated chevron prints, past the farmhouse grain stripes, the flowers, the damask, the faux black fur.... ah HA! What it this swatch of modern contemporary fabric that I have the perfect amount of to cover both the fronts of these speakers?! I remember buying this years ago because I just loved the colors, but really let's face it. It's not my style. It's not really the style I do anything in! But I like to do something out of the norm sometimes, so today was the day.

I even quick threw some of the taupe paint I put on the speakers onto an old headboard I had just for the photo op. Yes, I really have that many headboards sitting around!

What do you think? 

Even though these would match absolutely nothing in my house, sometimes it's just fun to be creative.  Now... hopefully someone will be brave enough to by them... ;)

You know what I was thinking while taking those apart? I wish I could hear the top ten songs that pumped out of these speakers back when they were new and someone was so excited to crank that volume dial up!

CUTE!! Easy DIY Heart Shirt

It started with cleaning out all the kids clothes. This flannel went through both my boys and little girl. It's one of the perks of having boys first. The hand-me-downs, as long as they aren't raggedy by then, can usually cross over to the little miss! I always have grand ideas of upcycling clothes and so I stash piles of them for those "someday projects". But let's be real. I absolutely suck on a sewing machine. That's my mother's expertise, but she lives 500 terrible miles away! But this one, even I could handle!!

I cut a heart shape out of the back of the flannel shirt and then added little slits to make it have a distressed appearance.

The key to covering imperfections? Distressed! Then nobody notices the less than perfect project. Cuz if I'm on a sewing machine, it is definitely going to be less than perfect!!

I sewed around the outside of the heart, so the stitching was on the outside.

Then I did something I regret. I tried to cut little ties in the front to knot it.

I kept messing up and the shirt kept getting shorter. Now, I've had three kids. Nobody wants to see a shirt that doesn't cover "that". Nobody. But there was no going back, and it DOES cover as long as I don't lift my arms too high, so it is what it is.

And this is me unashamedly putting a plug in for that corduroy black living room makeover!

Charming Chalkboards From Old Headboards

Is there anything more abundant on the curb than headboards??

Maybe it's just where I live.

It's probably cheese boxes in Wisconsin.

Not being one to waste anything, I pried off the wood embellishments and used them on other projects. Then using a circular saw, cut the left and right sides off. I cut a board to run the length of the bottom and using wood glue and a nail gun secured that to the bottom for a little shelf. With some white and paint for the trim and chalkboard paint for the body, here's what we've got!

Now let's move on to this dark plastic-made-to-look-like-wood beauty straight out of Grandma's house in the 1980's!

I literally stashed this in the "I'll do something with it someday" pile for ELEVEN YEARS. Folks, we don't even live at the same house as we did eleven years ago, which means it got hauled to our new place just to sit and be a home to spiders and dust for a decade! I wish I could say this was the only thing I brought from our old house and then let hang out in the barn untouched but.... Don't worry. I'll eventually get to them. Just like I did this one! Maybe.

Then after painting the main body with chalkboard paint (I got lazy and instead of making my own like normal, I bought the version Rustoleum makes). And you have a cute, useable chalkboard!!

Fill Hard-To-Decorate Wall Space With Charming DIY Shelving

This has been the year for shelves in our house!

In the last 12 months, we've added wall shelves to three different rooms and I keep wondering why I didn't do it sooner.

I invite you to come have a look-see!

I had some wall space in my house where nothing looked right.

First up was this big blank space over my buffet in the family room.

I gotta tell you about this buffet before we move on to the shelves.

Someone posted it in our neighborhood facebook group as a "Free, come and get it! Would make a good workbench in a garage".  Whoa, whoa whoa. Honey, I'm there. Don't anyone be puttin' that in their garage with greasy tools! It's going straight in my family room AS IS! That's right, I didn't even dab some Old English on it. 

So it's totally against my norm, but I bought the materials for these shelves (the wood from the other projects were salvaged barn wood). These metal brackets and boards were from Menards. I had every intention of staining the wood, but once I got them up and staged them... I couldn't decide what stain I thought would look good and then the more I looked at them the more I felt the boho vibe comin' off them.... so call me lazy or call me a trendsetter, I don't give a rip. I'm leavin' 'em raw.

(Yup, records are cool now. But some of us never stopped listening to our vinyls....)

I'm not big into knick knacks taking up residence on side tables, etc. so shelves are a great way to show off things like my wood cat statues and things I pick up at yard sales that I find interesting.

Over-The-Computer-Desk Shelves

This space also always puzzled me. Everything I tried hanging on the wall felt "off" with that computer screen. 

Why did it take me so long to think of shelves? I feel like an idiot.

Tim ordered these metal brackets online but I wanted them to angle up so so the boards appeared to be floating shelves. They blend in with the black walls and also the objects on the shelf would hide the hardware if they didn't hang down. We had to cut off the end because it curved up and they weren't the right size. Nothing a black sharpie couldn't fix! Just colored in the cut edge. The boards were a little warped because they were from an old barn, but they had the perfect rustic patina. 

An awkward corner is now interesting and full of style!

Last and definitely least...

Half Bath Shelves

My mom has been bugging me for yeeeears to put shelves over the toilet in our half bath.

So I did have a few fleeting anxious thoughts of not having cabinet doors to hide bathroom-y things behind... but there is this ancient old invention that we still use today - 
BASKETS. This "before"  photo is about 10 years old... I had painted over the subway art a few years back, but this is the only before photo I could find. (I really went through a phase where I subway arted everything!)

Yup, so much cuter now! You were right, Mom!

Again, those are made with salvaged wood. These particular ones came from a friend who tore down his garden shed and donated them to my stash. 

I'll always be grateful to all the folks who call me before starting their fire!
