The Free "Mystery Furniture" from Craigslist (That Mom Stole)

The conversation went something like this:

Me: Hi, I saw you had a listing on Craigslist for a piece of free furniture and I was just calling to ask about it.
Her: What do you want to know?
Me: Well, how about what is it?
Her: I have no idea.
Me: Well, is it like a dresser?  Table?
Her: We seriously can't figure it out.  It's big and was left here when we bought the house.
Me:  Okay so you can't give me any hints as to what this might be used for?
Her: Nope, don't have the slightest clue, you just have to come if you want it.
ME: So can I fit this in a car of do I need a truck?
Her: It's very heavy.

This was going nowhere, and my curiosity was very aroused, so I set up a time to pick up this "mysterious furniture".

So with that as the only information to go on, I had no idea what to expect.
I was pleasantly surprised and excited when we arrived and saw this waiting for me:

The missing door was inside, and the legs needed to be attached.  It also had a skeleton key to lock the drawers.  Awesome!  And then there it sat.  First in my garage for a year... then I decided it probably should be put to better use rather than being hubby's work bench and we moved it out to the barn (where it sat for a few more years) and I painted it gray.  I was going to paint it gray and highlight all the details in white.  Going to, being the key phrase.  Because not long after I got my base coat of gray paint on,  I had another phone conversation.  This time with my mom.

Mom: Hi Kammy, you know that big old buffet out in your barn?  I want that!
Me: What?!  I want it!
Mom: Where would you put it?  You have no room!
Me: But, but, but...  I'll find a spot. Let me think. I already started painting it.
Mom: Well that's too bad...  I want it for my dining room, to put in place of the one I'm going to sell.
Me: Okay, I guess for all you do for me, I can spare my beautiful, gorgeous buffet....
Mom: I'm coming out with the truck (She lives five hundred miles away) and I'm going to paint it black with gold highlights.

And she did come get it and she did paint it and she did do a darn good job if I do say so myself!  I was visiting last week and it was beautiful.  I snapped some photos to share with ya'll.

Beautiful legs, that took a little work to attach - Thanks, Dad and my Honey!!

The original hardware cleaned up good (according to mom).

  3. Gorgeous! What else do you have in that barn? You should start selling the unfinished pieces to all the new furniture painters--I am sure you could make some good money!

  9. Wish I had your vision. Speaking of cleaning up hardware, I just saw Rehab Addict clean gunky old hardware by letting it soak in water overnight in a crockpot. Maybe you already knew that - sounded slick to me.
