Boy Hand-Me-Downs Get Girly

I'm frugal.  Real frugal.  Which means I hardly ever, ever, EVER buy a brand new piece of clothing for my kids.  Thankfully, we are blessed to get lots of hand-me-downs from friends.  This old black sweatshirt was one such hand-me-down.  I have blogged about stenciling on clothes before HERE if you are interested in seeing more.  But today I'm going to show you how a boy's black sweatshirt became a cute girly sweatshirt for my little four year old girl with the big brothers.

Since the background was black, I used white paint first.  I always squirt a little of Martha Stewart's Fabric Medium into my acrylic paint so it won't wash out in the laundry.  Then when the white dried, I did the same thing with aqua blue, pink, and green, mixing the fabric medium in with each color.  I let it set for a day.  It has now been laundered several times and hasn't lost any of it's color.

I'm still trying to figure out a way to "girl-ify" navy blue baseball footie jammies.  But until then, she doesn't mind wearing them a bit, so we'll just leave it at that. :)

  3. This is so cute! I would have thought it was bought brand new. My daughter wore only her brothers old pjs until she was about 2 when she started showing interest in girly stuff and characters. I picked some girly pjs up secondhand and started getting rid of her brothers old pjs. She is wearing batman pjs tonight...a hand me down from brother. She chose those over Dora.

    I get a lot of hand-me-downs from friends for my daughter, and very often it`s clothes from boys :)

  6. When I was young, I wanted nothing more than to wear my older brother's hand-me-downs. My daughter...not so much. She's into anything pink and sparkly and frilly. I know I could take some of her brother's clothes and girlify them. Thanks for how-to! {stopping by from the FDTR link-up}
