Shaped Cakes Without Cake Molds

*Disclaimer:  I actually dislike decorating cakes and am not professional by any stretch of your wildest imagination.  I do these three times a year - for my kids' birthdays! They are not perfect and I'm sure there will be more to criticize than praise, but if you're like me and don't want to buy an expensive cake or the tools to make one,  than this is for you!

I finally listened to the voice of experience, my mother dear, and tried parchment paper.  Laying the parchment paper in the 9x13 pan and then baking as usual made it super easy to remove the cake!

I did a Google search on Schnauzer cakes and found an image I liked.  I actually took a piece of paper and put it on my computer screen and traced it.  Then I cut it out and laid it on top of my cake.  Using a small paring knife, I cut the shape of the dog's head out.  My little girl was sitting on the counter next to me licking her chops and ready to snatch up the "scraps".

To "draw" the face on, I used a black gel you can buy from the cake decorating section of the grocery store.  It comes in a tube that you just squeeze and it's really easy to use.

Don't tell Ty, but I sneaked into his candy stash and stole a red heart sucker from his Valentine candy to use for the puppy tongue.

The birthday girls:

Tori with her "Taffy" and Lois with her "Lindsey".

  1. Kammy,
So inventive. Much better than putting $20 in Wilton's pocket for a one time use. You painted a beautiful memory for your daughter.
