(Slightly) Unconventional Bookshelves

The last thing I wanted in my "book nook" on the landing was to use what I've always used to house my books - a standard black adjustable-shelf book case made from press board, sold in every mega store in the world.  I, however, did not get mine at one of those said stores.  Sometimes Parma folk still use the bartering system.  I mowed a women's lawn and she gave me a bookcase in exchange.  I'd rather be paid with cash, but ya know.  When you ain't got it, you ain't got it.  Anyways, fortunately for me, there was some "junk" left in the outbuildings when we won the auction on this estate in May.  My partner in crime design and decor, Maran Buck, had come up from Chicago to help me out of my "where do I begin" stupor after we moved in and together we conquered the spider webs and overgrown buildings to pull out my future book shelves.

Yeah, in that white building hiding back there in the brush.

If you look closely, you will see the dirty sweat pouring off MareBear's face.  Oh man, the sun was brilliant that day!  Tobin joined in as we bashed out the faux back piece and some of the dividers.  We figured out these were once used in a music store in a mall, probably to hold thousands of dollars worth of CD's, sporting the hottest names of the 90's.

Maran went to town putting screws in.  Not ot mention suburbs and villages.  We put screws in that thing every few inches to insure that thing would never fall on someone's precious little noggin'!  I think Fat Albert could do pull-ups on it and it'd be secure.  Not that Fat Albert can do pull-ups....

Maran and I rummaged through boxes, sorted through books to keep, and went to work staging.  She's a staging hero.  Don't you think?

Still love my quirky painted wood cat from Heather!

This clock was a gift from my great Aunt,  Jan Sluiter, and I think of her every time I look at it.  Miss her like crazy!

  2. Those shelves look fabulous, Kammy. You did a great job redesigning. I must admit, the thought had passed through my mind that I hoped you had secured them hard and fast to that wall, so I was happy when I read that you did! Great work!
