Rescued Barn Door From a Forsaken Iowa Farm

On the estate we live, there are plenty of cool old barn doors - including some sliding ones.  So when my mom called from an old abandoned acreage that my uncles farm around and asked if I wanted an awesome barn door, I told her I really didn't need her to haul one from Iowa all the way to Michigan for me.  But THEN she texted me this picture:

I immediately called her back and screamed "I'LL TAKE IT!!!"  Then blubbered in agreement over the gorgeous hardware.

Here is a picture of the back side of this neglected and dilapidated old barn - you can see a track laying on the ground from another sliding door if you look closely.

Here's a picture of the house that is barely still standing.  I've gotten a few "treasures" out of that myself.

It was a very wide door and we only needed half it's size for the space so Dad cut it down to the size I wanted.  We took it outside to remove all the dirt and then just in case there were any little buggers living in the wood, I gave it a major coating of bug killer spray.  I know, not the best "green" option, but better than risking anything!

My mom sure gets a lot done for standing around with a coffee in her hand! :)

Here's the wall before we cut the door out:

Cutting out the doorway... using my much-less-mess trick that you can see HERE.

And it's hung!  The board that the track is on is original and I wanted to keep it so bad because I loved it's rustic chippy white paint but the crown moulding wouldn't quite fit with it so we had to take the track off.  Look at my awesome parents... smiling and so proud of the door they brought for me. ;)

Now all I need is the perfect rug!  Still searching. :)

Though we don't ever shut it, I do like the look of the backside!

We made a little latch by simply bending a nail.  Don't want this to be a toy for the kids - how fun would some hyper children thing sliding this door right off the end would be!  We put a big nail at the top of the track to stop that from happening too.... just in case!

Close up of this super cool old hardware!

One of the best parts of this?  It didn't cost anything!!!! :)
Just the way I like it.  Free.

Upcyling Plaque Into Nursery Decor

So I started with four of these (they were actually a weird brown faux wood before I let my kids paint them all blue because they wanted to paint something):

I kept two of them blue and made them into "missing sock boards".  That left two more that I needed to create something with.  I had bought some Styrofoam owls for a few quarters at a garage sale and spray painted them white.
I still have a couple I didn't paint white - they're pretty cute, don't ya think?

I thought if I was painting this with the goal of landing in someone's nursery, I should do a more neutral color and repainted it gray.  Sorry kids.  Then using letter stencils, white paint, and a brush, covered it in the ABC's.

Lastly I glued on my white owl with Gorilla Glue.

"Owl" always love cute owl decor. :)
Although now I'm wishing I had used the owl with the big eyes...

Now I have more of those wood plaque things left to do something with.... any ideas?

5 Signs For The Crazy Chicken Lady In Your Life

Backyard chickens.
It's the hip thing to do right now!

Well here where I live, people don't do it because they're hip, it's just the way of life.

But even yuppies like my brother, Dr. Brandon Hayes PHD,  who lives on one of the busiest streets in Madison has girls clucking in his backyard!  His stories of them escaping and marching down the sidewalk are always entertaining.

My city-slicker friend Sarah is from an upscale suburb in Detroit and has turned into a crazy chicken lady living in the country a few miles from me.  Her hens roost in the tree at night and we laugh over her hilarious chicken stories in the middle of the grocery store, making people stare. (Or they could just be staring because she is one of the most beautiful human beings on the planet!)  She regularly consults chicken pages on Facebook and receives answers (and lots of them!) instantly from all those passionate about their girls.

Sarah with one of her "girls"

All that to say, most of us know at LEAST one person we could call "a crazy chicken lady"!

So you're probably asking, does Kammy have chickens?

Well I have only three at the moment.  As a kid, my dad ordered about two hundred baby chicks every summer and it was our job (my brother, sister, and I) to raise them up to get fat and ready for the table, but we never had layers.  Our three present girls are more my little boy's than mine, as he is head-over-heels in love with critters and wants to be a zoo keeper some day.

This week, I've been a having a creative blast making these
chicken signs with the new chicken stencil my mom gave me for Christmas!

Three days ago, I got the following message from his second grade teacher on my Facebook wall:

"Some of your eggs were kept safely on my desk instead of going out for recess in a winter coat pocket.  We had a good laugh together before he ran outside to play".

Oops, guess he forgot to bring them in before getting on the bus!!

Funny memories like that makes this sign so true:

I made this sign with floor board trim I found in the barn- white chippy paint and everything.
This sign is dedicated to some of the "crazy chicken ladies" I know: Sarah, Resha, Esther, Becky, Tina....

and perhaps this one - I'm pretty sure Obsessive Chicken Disorder (OCD) is totally a thing:

and then just a little cute sign made from corncrib slats (because chickens are a blessing):

And  how could I end this post without a shot of my sweet feathered friends (yes you see four when I said earlier I only had three... sniff sniff)?

Click HERE to see the post I wrote on my little boy and his hens!
If you like these signs as much as I liked making them, pin this image! :)
