Repurposed Vintage Lug Wrench

I was doing some thrift store surfing a few weeks ago and not having any luck when this rust old lug wrench caught my eye.  I couldn't leave the store without it.  I knew it would look good on some weathered barnwood doing something. :)

My mom has been here this week and we have been putting our big noggins' together and creating up a storm in the basement!  (The basement!!!  I can't believe I'm staying that!  To think a few months ago I was scared of it!)  I wasn't sure how to go about securing the lug wrench (mom insists it's a tire iron, but she doesn't know that I googled it and it's a lug wrench!) when she had the idea of using rusty nails.  Then I had the idea of bending them over towards the middle to secure, and she had the idea of taking a break to eat a cookie.....  we work great together like that.

We screwed hooks in the top and looped an old chain through the hooks to hang it on a wall.

Using some black paint and letter stencils, I put N, E, S, and W to make the coolest "junk" compass ever!  And yes, I had to say "Never Eat Slimy Worms" just to be sure. :)

And now if your son needs this in his room, which I'm pretty sure he does, you can find it at the Parma Antique Mall. :)

Delightful Details! French Provincial Nightstands With Stenciled Drawers

This french provincial set was every girl's dream back in 1962.  Now that girl is spending money on Arbonne wrinkle cream, not french provincial bedroom sets.  Unless of course, she spots it in a boutique with a gorgeous makeover like this one (and it's big sister) received!

Thanks to my bearded friend (as in AWARD WINNING BEARDed friend), Nate Drumhiller, for scoring this french provincial set for me!!  Those are the kind of friends every junker wants.

Sorry ladies, he's got a cute little lady.  BUT if you need any chimney/fireplace work done - Nate is your man.  When it comes to beards and fireplaces, he doesn't mess around. Check out www.thegratehaus.com.

I painted them each a different shade of gray.  Not only because I thought that would be chic, but because I ran out of paint. No surprise there!

I've always seen these cutesy little details on drawers and hidden things and always figured "WHO EVEN CARES?  Ain't nobody sees that stuff anyway."  It's like wallpapering the closet.  But THEN.  I started renting a space in the Parma Antique Mall... and open drawers make great displays.  But when I pulled open the drawers on one of my dressers in the booth....  oh sheesh.  Embarrassing naked sides.  They needed clothes....

Or stencils!

I stenciled this design on the sides in a dark slate blue color, and a light aqua blue on the smaller night stand.

I used a homemade gray chalk paint on the whole piece, and then used a coarse grit sandpaper to sand all the edges for a delightfully distressed look.  I also spray painted the handles a nice fresh white.
Sh-sh-sh-shabby CHIC.

This darling pair can be YOURS!  Ohhhhh yes.  Don't y'all get trampled running to the Parma Antique Mall to get them. :)

BRAND NEW!!

As always,

Thanks for stopping by!

Parma Mill Grain Sack Love {Chair Redo}

Hi!!!!!  It's a dreary, cold day in March, and I got a kid home from school with a fever but life rolls on and I've got a big silly smile on my face because life is just okay!  We've had some close calls the last couple of weeks with a car accident while the kids got on the bus two mornings ago that scared the snot out of me as I watched from the window, a tree falling on my workshop during some severe wind just as I was walking outside to work in it and watched it happen,

But we're all unharmed and happy!  Was a very sad week however for some of my friends who unexpectedly said goodbye to loved ones, are struggling with health, etc.  My heart broke for each one of them as I picked up the phone or talked to them and saw/heard the tears.  I wish I could offer comfort, but since I'm not in their shoes, I have to point them to the one who not only sees the BIG picture, unlike us, but He feels their pain in a real way. The Lord Jesus as prophesied centuries before He was ever on the earth in Isaiah 53:

".....a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
    he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away.
    Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
    for the transgression of my people he was punished.
Was this post supposed to be about a chair??

Can you tell my mind is NOT on chairs and furniture makeovers today?
Life and God has been REAL lately, folks!

Okay let's get back to it.

The good ole' boys at the Parma Mill gave me some old legit grain/feed sacks:

They told me all the farmers initialed their feed sacks so nobody would steal them.
I can't remember if they told me who VM was.... but I forgot if they did!  Maybe some of you Parma folk would know!

So I just can't help but include this photo of where I got them.  Oh man I love this old place.  It makes me strangely happy to pull up and see Calvin in his 80's lean over that railing and ask if I need some layer feed..... (next time I think I need to make sure he's in the picture!).

Back to the chair.  After laying the seat on the feed sack, cutting around it and stapling it on the back, I needed to do some finessing to the wood.  The green paint actually sanded off with ease!  This chair had been sitting out in the weather for a while and I could tell that the paint was not an accident.  At one time, someone had really done a work of art on it!  I picked this up for $1, by the way, at my secret location.  I can't give away my secret or I won't have any more chairs to redo 'cause y'all will run right over there and snatch them up!  Haha.

So there it is, all beautiful and rustic.  I decided not to paint the wood.  I like it naked. :)

And so for now, it's sitting in the corner of the bedroom over at Gidley Station, until I can get a more comfortable chair in it's place.  Gidley Station is the house next door and is our latest venture and you can stay in the old railroad station now on Airbnb!  Click here if you're interested: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/17448031

Hallway Storage When There's No Closet

Howdy folks!  I'm getting smarter with organizing in my old age.  At least I like to think so.
All my sheets/curtains/extrastuffthatididntknowwheretoput got stuffed into the drawers of this big dresser in my hallway.  There is no hall closet and the dresser seemed to work great.

But it was such a behemoth.  And took lots of floor space.  And collected record-breaking monster dust bunnies in the dark space underneath. Record-breaking, People.

So after I hauled it away from the wall to paint said wall, I decided it just couldn't go back.
I found a chippy old board (see photo after next to see HOW COOL IT IS THAT IT CAME FROM OFF THIS HOUSE!  Yes, I'm trying to repurpose and preserve EVERYTHING from this estate).  And then I also found a little shelf I had stashed that had silver hooks on it because heaven forbid I should have to run to the store to buy something new.  Heck no, I will just take the hooks off the shelf I found for a quarter at a garage sale, thank you very much!

Yeah, so as mentioned above, this is where the chippy board originated.  Get your magnifying glasses out and see those chippy white painted boards from decades ago.... that got tore off (oh sadness) when we resided the house and did other such updates.

Okay.  So now we've got the board screwed onto the wall, and the hooks screwed in it.... now how about those bags?  I thought I could find something I liked online for cheap, but nada.  Not for the prices and the sizes I was looking for.  Even China let me down.

So I resorted to my stash of fabric.... which usually isn't traditional fabric....
And in this case it was this gigantuous L Shaped Sofa cover that I bought once on clearance at Ikea.  I used it first to recover my dining chairs and do a graphic transfer on (see those HERE).  I had plenty left to sew my four new tote bags with.

Now I am not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination.  But rustic is the name of the game here, so who really cares if they don't look perfect?  Just so they hold!  And baby, I back stitched and forward stitched and back stitched till the cows came home.

Then I sewed a matching ribbon (also dug something up that I had on hand and had JUST enough!!  Phew!) inside each side - which I also back stitched the snot out of - and tied them in a bow and hung them up.  I love having them so I can untie them because it's easier to open the bag wide up to dig stuff out of or put things away.

I guess I should mention that I used a black paint marker to scroll the words "Queen", "Queen", and "Twin" on.  The fourth one does not say "Double".  It actually says nothing because I decided - for now - to put pillow cases in it.  Why I have a zillion pillow cases, I do not know.  Maybe it's because I have a zillion pillows.  And I do have a double bed, but it's in my guest room and so I just keep the extra double sheets in the dresser next to it.  Not that you really care... but thought I should explain myself?  No?  Sorry if I wasted your time.  It was just five seconds, depending on how fast you read.:)
