Stenciled Granite Fireplace Surround Update

A few months ago a couple of my "mature" older lady friends came over and one of them ooooed over the tile around my fireplace.  I did a fist pump with a yessssssssssssss and then told her it was her imagination.  No tile job was done by me.  I can paint, but I've never tiled....

Last year I shared my stenciled granite surround fireplace with you.  We had the chimneys capped for a couple of reasons and were waiting to see how we liked the gas log in the living room before getting one for the family room.  I had an old trunk in it, which got a fair share of love and hate comments. :)

Well, this winter we had Bill-Dude come back and install the same ventless gas log we had put in the other fireplace because we loved it.

Since every "normal" human being seems to love a good before and after, here's what this room looked like when we bought it almost two years ago:

A close up of the granite with the pink-ish hue.  Ugh.
But I'm not the type of girl who is into pink anywhere but on my lips.  And maybe toenails occasionally. :)

I used Zinsser Perma-White paint on the granite and applied it with a foam roller.  A lot of people also questioned how paint would hold up with the heat of a gas log.  Well folks, I'm happy to report is has held up perfectly!  No bubbling, peeling, nothing!  The granite surround does get very hot, but the paint remains unscathed.  Phew!

You can read all the stencil details HERE but I'll give you the photos:

And we have a warm, cozy fireplace!  Without the mess of wood - YAY!!! I know, just NOT the same as real wood a lot of my Parma Peeps would say but... my hubby aid he cut and hauled enough wood as a kid and wasn't going to ever do it again.  Alrighty then.

You probably noticed in the "before" picture that there was no doorway there.
You can read about how we cut that doorway and opened the room up HERE.

Excuse my wintery wreath still on the mirror.  I've finally taken it down for spring!
I should say my mom took it down for me when she was here.  I'm one of those that would probably get around to it in July.... ;)

If you're inspired, please pin! :)

  4. I love it ! I am right there with you, if you don't love what you have then change it. So many people live with things they hate but with a little TLC and paint, almost anything can be changed for the better! ;)
