Easy Tween Vanity Desk Built From Nightstands

My tween daughter had suddenly decided her adorable antique white vanity that used to be Grandma's just wasn't for her anymore. No amount of convincing arguments that it was the perfect piece for her bedroom was persuading her otherwise and she was constantly googling white desks and vanities. Are you kidding?  A kid of MINE is wanting to buy a NEW piece of furniture?  That crap that's made out of pressboard? Surely not. That's when the idea of building one customized just for her using these two castoffs hit me.
About a year ago, I drove by these on the side of the road.  They were sturdy and solid so I tossed them in the trunk. Inspiration wasn't hitting, so they sat in my workshop taking up room with the thirty two other pieces of uninspiring furniture.  I thought originally they were nightstands, end tables, or maybe even the sides of an old vanity that used to have a mirror in the middle.  But now that I look at the before and after side by side... they may have actually been part of a desk to begin with!  Unless the original owner steps up and makes their voice heard, I guess I'll never know!

I used the "wet rag and hot iron" method to try to get the rest of the peeling veneer off, but it was crazy stubborn.  Like my daughter.  So I resorted to my stash of lath boards, the stash that I thought would last forever and is finally proving that it won't.

Have I bragged on my Ryobi nail gun lately?  Oh, I did in the last post? And the one before that?
Yeah well, it deserves to be bragged about in every post.  Makes slapping this stuff on so easy.
Bam, bam, bam, done.

I only did the lath treatment on the sides that face out.  The insides were smooth and didn't need anything hidden. Once that was done, the whole shebang got the white paint treatment.

Next came the top.  I had picked up these nice wood planks from a surplus sale at Albion College.  They look kind of like table leaves, but I think they were part of a cubicle or something.  No clue really, so I'll quit guessing.  But they were nice and blond and had a rounded edge, perfect for the front of the desk.  I used the table saw to splice the second board for the perfect sized desk top.

Now I ain't claimin' to be no carpenter, so I'm sure if you look close this won't be real purdy finish work, but I just wanted something that was sturdy and cute. So using more of the same wood pieces, I cut two equal pieces and screwed them on from underneath.  Then I screwed the shelf across the top.  I am the worst when it comes to splitting wood with a screw, and this project was no exception. It only happened with one screw thank goodness, and since I wasn't striving for perfection and was just for my own kid, I left it.

Since I have "stashes" of just about everything, I rummaged through my stash of mirrors and found an oval one.  It also got the "white paint treatment" and looks muy bueno over the desk!

Behold - the FINISHED PRODUCT!!

Oh, what's that stencil you see?  I had the urge to add some pizzazz and tossed my Mandala stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils cock-eyed over the desk top. I used my roller with white paint on it to go over the stencil and in less than a minute had this beautiful design on top! My girl wrinkled her nose a little at the extra detail, but she always takes a minute and is cool with it now.

She is obsessive about white lights and very soon after we moved the desk into her room, she had rigged up a wall of lights as a backdrop.  Pretty cool, girl, pretty cool.

Oh hey, let's talk drawer pulls before we go!
The holes for pulls were an odd size. I had nothing in my "drawer pull stash" that would fit, and Lowes failed me too.  So it was DIY pulls for the win. You can click HERE for my tutorial on how to make these wood drawer pulls!

Totally 80's Sewing Cabinet Gets A Makeover

Doesn't that just scream 80's?!  The fabric? Drawer pulls? Orange-hued wood? Just a sewing desk in general??
It makes my mind go back to the days of wandering around in fabric stores with my mom and sister, picking out fabric and patterns for new spring dresses!  My mom sewed almost ALL of our clothes.  And believe it or not, I even had a few outfits made out of vintage flour sacks.  NO, I'm not that old... but I guess my great grandma had a stash and well we were kinda poor there for awhile when Dad got laid off his job at John Deere. So short outfits out of flour sacks it was.

For the chair, I just wanted to put new fabric over the old, so I  carefully cut off the piping so it wouldn't protrude and look all funky. And I don't have the patience or let's face it - the skill - to replace it. Ha.

Sorry I don't have more pictures of this process, I get too focused on what I'm doing and forget to document. I just used my staple gun to put new fabric over the old.

I painted the whole piece with a bluish tinted gray (I mix my own so don't ask what color!) and put new cup drawer pulls on.  Then pulled off the top and used some old table leaves for a rustic, updated look.

The biggest compliment you can give a blogger is to
PIN their project!
If you liked this, please add it to your pinterest boards. :)

This project reminds me a lot of this one I took on last spring
That wood set with the brown velour cushions!
Who had one of these??

Curbside Sewing Desk Revamp

It was a good day.  A good, fun day in my twenty-one year old F150, ninety degrees and no air conditioning, checking out our town's annual clean-your-house-out-and-get-your-crap-picked-up-for-free week.

Any day spent with a good friend having a heat stroke next to you going from junk pile to junk pile on the curb picking up free treasures and well... junk... is a fun day.  In fact I'd go so far as to say I hadn't had that much fun since the day the rats ate my baby sister. Which is actually a Robert Bloch quote, who I'm not even familiar with, and if you must know the rats didn't eat my baby sister.  Just her little finger. My sister is alive and kicking. She kicks especially hard when I eat more than my half of the chicken sandwich we were supposed to split. Or when I talk to strangers too long in public.

The great thing is, the town usually holds it's village-wide garage sales the week before "junk week" starts, so anything that doesn't sell gets put on the curb.  I had actually eyed this sewing desk at the owner's sale... but I'd already bought so much from them I had to return with my truck, so I turned it down.  And wouldn't you know it... there it was in the free pile the next week. Score!

Since most of the veneer was peeling, I took off all the handles and used a putty knife to remove the top layer of veneer on the drawer fronts.  There was no way no how to get those top pulls off however as they were faux drawers and no matter what, I couldn't finagle my screwdriver back there.  I didn't want to replace the hardware since I was totally digging the style, but they needed an update for sure.  Look no further than Rust-oleum's hammered spray paint.  Man I love that stuff. I woudln't normally spray hardware while it's on the piece but well shoot, I already told you I couldn't get these two off so I surrounded them carefully with painters tape and paper for the overspray.

Before you ask about the paint color, because I guarantee someone will, don't.  I have no idea.  I use mistints and mix my own colors from those mistints.  I'd like to call this one Kammy's Slatey-charcoaly-grayish-black.  Aye, so totally professional.

I hope you all try to support local businesses, especially after the hard hit most of them took in 2020! I was out putting my money where my mouth is, doing some Christmas shopping a couple months ago at Brother's Outdoor World in Jackson, MI when I spied my desk being used to display all these adorable snowmen! Brother's Outdoor World is not just a landscaping company like most people think. It also has an adorable little shop full of local goods! If you're a local-yocal, go visit them soon and tell them I sent you. :)

REPURPOSING: A Desk For The Kid With ADHD

Can't believe I came close to saying no to this piece! It seemed so far gone.  But at the last minute, I added it to the trailer of treasures I was getting from Dakota's barn.  If anything, I could do something with the cute drawers, I thought!

Then I started disassembling it and under all the peeling veneer and dirt, it had some great sturdy bones! AND I didn't even need WD40 to get the treadle turning that rusty wheel! Boom.

I mixed up a gray chalk paint (Plaster of Paris dissolved in hot water and added to paint) and painted the base.  It was tricky to get behind the wheel, even after putting a plastic sack over it and I had to resort to a small artist brush to do the trick.

The top obviously had a large opening where the machine once sat so I dug through my hoarded stashes of wood and found the perfect boards and cut them to size on my new Ryobi Miter saw. That sliding blade is a game changer, folks!

I put a couple brad nails in the top just to hold the boards in place and then screwed them in from the bottom to firmly secure them.

My fingernails always look like crap, so to stop adding to the crappy look I put on a glove.  Stain on fingernails is about as attractive  as the big scab I had above my lip a few weeks ago when I fell off my bike. Ugh.  I swear I'm like a five year old who needs training wheels. I can put some serious miles on my bike but I've been thrown off of it twice in the last few months.  What the wha....

Also, can I just say how thankful I am that my kids went to a couple of those workshops Home Depot used to have back in the day? Lots of cool things used to take place before the 'Rona. I have some sweet aprons because of that little workshop. Thanks, Home Depot. That wooden motorcycle has long hit the trash, but that apron has lots of mileage left, Baby!

I ended up painting the drawer fronts too, but sanded the pulls and restained them to freshen them up. Back to the wood stash to find a piece of trim to go on that spot where it's missing.  And back to to the miter saw for a little 45 degree angle action. Secured it with my Ryobi brad nailer and added paint. Can't tell it was missing.  Just how I like.

I'm convinced this is the perfect desk for the child with ADHD.  The treadle still turns the band wheel, so it just makes sense that in order for a kid with the need to move and pay attention to that online instructor, they can keep their feet busy pumping that treadle!

The base of my grandma's kitchen table was an old sewing machine just like this. She would make Kraft Mac N Cheese and I'd devour five helpings of that special treat while pumping that thing so fast I thought it would take off into the family room leaving a jet stream in it's wake!  It was annoying when my brother or sister tried to pump it from the other side and throw off my rhythm, but being the dominant sibling that I was, I usually won that battle.

This will be for sale at our Christmas barn sale - November  6 and 7, 2020!
