Grandpa's Old High Chair

A few years ago, we inherited the highchair that my father-in-law and his older siblings ate their little toddler meals in.  How sweet!  But by then, my kids had outgrown highchairs and it's been collecting dust.  I tried to sell it, but nobody seemed to want it, and nobody else in the family cared.  Sniff, sniff. Where's the sentiment, people? ;)

I even had a "before" picture of it but since I have up trying to sell it I must have deleted it off of my phone.  Then I decided to paint it black and OH it's so cute now!

And you know what?  The good Lord didn't allow it to sell because he knew I'd be needin' it!
I'm not babysitting a sweet little boy who loves to make a mess all over the newly painted black finish.  The old metal tray comes right off so I can easily wash it.

No, it's not OSHA safe by any means....the strap was broke and I tossed it.  But I keep a close eye on him so he doesn't topple out.  And it gets used once a week at the most.
Don't worry, his mama knows what he eats in, I okay-ed it with her. ;)

Upcyling Plaque Into Nursery Decor

So I started with four of these (they were actually a weird brown faux wood before I let my kids paint them all blue because they wanted to paint something):

I kept two of them blue and made them into "missing sock boards".  That left two more that I needed to create something with.  I had bought some Styrofoam owls for a few quarters at a garage sale and spray painted them white.
I still have a couple I didn't paint white - they're pretty cute, don't ya think?

I thought if I was painting this with the goal of landing in someone's nursery, I should do a more neutral color and repainted it gray.  Sorry kids.  Then using letter stencils, white paint, and a brush, covered it in the ABC's.

Lastly I glued on my white owl with Gorilla Glue.

"Owl" always love cute owl decor. :)
Although now I'm wishing I had used the owl with the big eyes...

Now I have more of those wood plaque things left to do something with.... any ideas?

Music Cabinet turned Baby Cabinet

This came out of my mother-in-law's Dad's house.  I was pretty excited to inherit it!  If you don't know (as I didn't!), it is a cabinet to store sheet music in.  If I'm wrong, correct me.  But that's what I was told and who am I to argue?  When I went to paint this, I decided to do a really good job and scrape off all of the old finish.  It took me hours to scrape just the top off!!!  I multi-tasked though by doing the job outside in the sun so I could get a tan while I worked. :)  I decided not to do the rest and just paint over the finish since it was so hard to get off.  I couldn't BELIEVE IT.  It went over the old finish like magic.  But the part I scraped off???  After about seven coats, a pinkish hue still showed through!  Needless to say, I've learned my lesson about doing some things the "right way" (which really end up not being the right way afterall!).
I replaced the chunk of wood that latched the door shut with an antique wood button.  I guess I should have painted that white too, huh! oops.

It is the perfect piece of furniture in my baby's room.  See that cute little box for holding all those baby socks on the bottom right?  Some kleenex boxes are just too cute to toss, so I have to try to use them somewhere. :)  I just cut the opening bigger and it's just the perfect little "sock box".

Rocking Horse Before and After

I can't for the horsey life of me find my original  "BEFORE" picture, so this one with Ty, the horse,  and his banky will have to do.
Can you tell I've been ambitious this week??  I was browsing a few weeks ago on my favorite blog of all times, BetterAfter, when I saw a before and after of a rocking horse.  Low and behold, I found one the NEXT DAY in a thrift store.  They were asking $45, which was down from $60 the lady told me!  I think NOT.  What part of "thrift" don't you understand, people?  Fast forward a few weeks and I'm in Goodwill out in Iowa with my mom and what do I see?  A pretty wood rocking horse, looking at me.  Rocking horse, rocking horse, what do you see?  A crazy lady that has obviously been to one to many early childhood conferences!  Crazy lady, crazy lady, what do you see?  Annnnd I'm done.  Anywoo,  let's just say it was a bargain.  I snatched it up and have been itching to do something with it.  Here's the before and after of Mr. Rocking Horse.
I tried to mix a brown paint that would be similar to the previous color so it would be easy to cover.  The contrast color is actually a light blue/green (though it looks white in the picture).

Update:  Just realized today that I'm a follower of the blog that did the original rocking horse that inspired me!  It was done before I became a follower apparently!  But she does some AWESOME stuff and it's all about making "trashed" furniture into something beautiful. You know I'm all about that!  Check her out at  Curbside Creations - I promise you'll love what you see!

Tori's lamp

Not sure why, but this odd little lamp just jumped out at me a few years ago while garage saling.  I even paid more than usual for it because well, it was so unique!  It looked a little oddly out of place in Tori's room so today we took care of that.  I love how one simple addition turned it into such a darling little light in her room!
I pulled apart some yellow gerber daisies and spray painted them teal.  Using a hot glue gun I glued three flower layers to the shade and put a big brown button in the middle.

Tour from Tori - my nursery

Hi. They call me Tori.  I got myself two big brothers and we just aren't into pink and frills, so can you believe the duds they got me wearing for this?!  Well, I'm about to take you on a tour of my crib, and you won't find a speck of pink in it (unless you peek inside the closet).  I'm going to let you in on a few secrets, since my mommy doesn't believe in "wasting" money.  However, she did fork over some moola for the curtain fabric since she said something about me being a girl... and she'd never done a nursery for the boys... shows how I rate in the family, huh!  The princess has spoken, folks!  Now then, let's start with my bed.  Guess who else slept in this bed?  My mommy!  The balls were bright red and blue, so of course, those had to get painted my favorite color, turquoise.  I guess she didn't care that they looked gaudy and out dated when my big brothers slept in there.  Grandma made my curtains which we hung on fancy rods found at a garage sale for $1.  Now that big wood flower you see hanging on the wall?  (Good thing there aren't earthquakes in these here parts!)  Mom just picked that up at the Homer Hogstravaganza craft show.  The guy gave it to her for $6, because he said anyone with that many kids deserved a discount.  Weird thing is, just my brothers were with her!  Maybe he had double vision.  Know what my garbage can is?  One of those big tins that once contained 3 flavors of popcorn - just what everyone on your Christmas list who is hard to buy for will receive.  She wrapped two rows of that paintable wallpaper border around it (left over from her bedroom, 7 years ago, of course).
Now on to the cool shelf Grandpa Scott made, so high I'll never be able to reach it!  Mommy put it on the "to do" list on one of Grandpa's visits from Iowa (and she wonders why he doesn't come to visit very often!).  See, she had these brackets she bought a long time ago at IKEA and told him to go dig around in the corncrib for some boards.  He wasn't satisfied with what he found.  Grandpa can be picky sometimes.  So Mommy pulled out this tall bookcase that was hiding in Tobin's closet and he took it all apart and turned it into my shelf!  Then we found some chair rail from the barn to complete the look on the other side.  There was just enough!  As for the flowers that decorate the top, mom plopped them in little clay pots which she bought at JoAnn's and spruced up with a stripe of teal paint around each one and finished it off by tying a strip of brown polka dot fabric around the middle.  My mommy has this really cool friend named Laura who likes to spoil me.  She came over one day and painted those white flowers on the wall, just for me!  If you look closely, you'll see the "hippo" bank on my dresser and not pictured is a very rad light switch plate cover.  Laura painted those too.   The little rocking chair, that hopefully I'll be big enough to use soon, was stashed away in the Jackson Antique mall.  It was kind of scary looking, but mommy painted it white with a cool brown flower. My vanity dresser and the music stand that holds all my burp clothes and other baby necessities are from my daddy's grandpa's house.  Mommy painted them white and I think they're pretty neat!  One last thing, the rocking chair mommy sometimes feeds me in was a freebie from a friend, who was too nice to tell great aunt Maggie Lou it wasn't wanted.  Everyone seems to have mommy's number on speed dial when they have stuff they don't want!
It sat in the barn, ready for a "free sign" to be stuck on it, when Grandma Kim convinced mommy that despite it's "not so stylin'" looks, it was pretty comfy!  I'm glad she saved it.  I love to snuggle with her in it!
