Repurposed Vintage Stereo Speakers

You've seen it all, I know!
Well just when I think I've seen it all...  someone sends me something that makes me say "WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?!"
So this might not be one of those "blow you away" makeovers,
but I'm not sure I've seen anyone turn old speakers into nightstands before so let me know if you have!

I started by prying off the front. This one was pretty cool how it popped off and I could unscrew the insides pretty easily.

The taller one had more "guts" to "gut" but the front was just velcroed on so that was extra easy!
Also very easy to recover with fabric, as I just used my hot glue gun and went over top the existing fabric. There was so much insulation stuffed in there, I was pretty sure a mouse was going to scurry out at some point... but one did not. Not even a little mouse turd to be found.

After painting the wood with a dark taupe, I decided to recover the blacks, oranges, and browns of the front. These had such a modern look to them that I had to really dig in my fabric stashes. Past the colorful dated chevron prints, past the farmhouse grain stripes, the flowers, the damask, the faux black fur.... ah HA! What it this swatch of modern contemporary fabric that I have the perfect amount of to cover both the fronts of these speakers?! I remember buying this years ago because I just loved the colors, but really let's face it. It's not my style. It's not really the style I do anything in! But I like to do something out of the norm sometimes, so today was the day.

I even quick threw some of the taupe paint I put on the speakers onto an old headboard I had just for the photo op. Yes, I really have that many headboards sitting around!

What do you think?
Even though these would match absolutely nothing in my house, sometimes it's just fun to be creative.  Now... hopefully someone will be brave enough to by them... ;)

You know what I was thinking while taking those apart? I wish I could hear the top ten songs that pumped out of these speakers back when they were new and someone was so excited to crank that volume dial up!

I would appreciate it oh so much if you were to pin this!
Pinterest gets me the most traffic and if you want fresh content, then please take a second to put this on your boards. Thanks!

Green!! Trash 2 Treasure

The best days are the days people decide enough is enough and the junk they've been storing has gotta go!  I love that when people around here get that bee in their bonnet, I usually get a message because most of them know that Kammy would love to give it new life!

Let's get an up close...

This Ryobi orbital sander is awesome. I've had it for a year, and not sure how I lived life without it before. All those wasted years with that other dumb one.... good grief.

I wanted to keep some of the natural wood, especially the drawer fronts becasue of the wood grain and pattern. Restore-A-Finish in walnut to the rescue.  I finally used up the last of the can that someone anonymously sent me in the mail. Whoever you were, THANK YOU THANK YOU!
That stuff is the bomb.  Put it on a rag and rub it on. It's great just for wood scratches or polishing up. Even takes the white sun fade out of wood I just discovered!

Check out the wood grain on those drawer fronts!
And those fun black diamonds.... had to leave those!

Now check out these drawer pulls!  I cleaned them using a mild acid and then went over them with a rough sponge/scrubber and comet (bar keeper's friend).  They shined up so pretty! And don't forget to wear gloves when using acid - duh.

And hey ya'll, don't bother asking me what color of paint this olive green is.  As usual, it's a mistint!
Also known as "oops paint".  Let's see how we worked that mirror-less frame into the scene.

Wish I could take credit for that pumpkin wreath, but I bought it.
It was on clearance after the season once, so I bought it, stuck it under the guest bed and forgot about it for about three years.  That's okay, I still like it. Pumpkins will forever be trendy in the fall, right? I mean, what's there to take their place? I'm seriously wracking my brain to think of something absurd here, but nothing is coming. My funny blogging days are over. Not that anyone actually reads these posts... I mean I'm usually just "here for the pictures!" while on someone's blog so ain't no judgement here!

Now if you liked this idea,
do this gal a favor and pin it! :)

These will be for sale with lots of other goodies at my barn sale November 5 and 6th, 2021.

Trash 2 Treasure With Just Paint And A Stencil

A pal of mine was in the local resale shop when he found this for $6, thinking it was destined to end up on the trash pile, he couldn't leave it be.  He called me, asking if I could work my magic on it so he could give it to his girlfriend to put plants on. I suggested he leave the sweet sentiments on the table.... she might find them romantic. His name isn't Jaeden, and hers isn't Blake James, so maybe that's why he wasn't cool with that?

The only direction I had to go off was "She loves blue. Not aqua blue or turquoise, BLUE".
And I instantly had a vision in my head....

Now don't even ASK what this paint color is because I'm just going to show you this now:

I rarely know my paint colors because I mix my own or get mistints. And I'll bet you money even after saying that I'll still get a message asking what color of blue I used! People just look at pictures these days. Including me.

This stencil couldn't have worked out more perfectly. Perfect size-wise. I measured to find the exact middle and worked my way out towards the ends.

It's easy to use because it has the extra corner cut-outs to make it easy to line up your next spot.

And here's the finished product:

Fugly to Fabulous PLUS stenciled drawer knobs!

I've racked my brain and can't come up with where I got this end table from.  As in I have NO recollection of acquiring this piece.  I can't imagine I paid a dime for it... so it must have been on a curb somewhere. Which reminds me, if I had ten bucks every time someone tagged me in this meme on social media....

I might actually be able to afford new furniture.  🤣
(But really, where's the fun in that?!)

So this was an easy flip - painted it white using Valspar's expensive stuff that I can't remember the name of.  Oh there I go again forgetting stuff.  And then came the knobs... those dangly little original guys were interesting.  I thought about painting them black.  BUT... meh.  I've had some cool wood square ones taking up space in my drawer and got a little idea!

Such an easy way to make some sweet designer-ish pulls! I sanded the finish off the knobs, painted them gray, and then used just part of a stencil design.  The trick for something small like a knob is to use a design with thin lines so it won't look bulky and cheap.  Well that's what my non designer mind thinks anyway - for what it's worth.

Drum roll for the "after".....

Ain't she CUTE now??
I'll have this for sale at my barn sale November 6 and 7th - STAY TUNED!

Where my pinners at??
I made this graphic just for your board! :)

Using Plastic Wrap To Help Strip Furniture Paint

A little furniture-flippin' hack for you guys today.
The problem with blogging is, you read a cool trick somewhere and then years later when you actually try it you have no idea where you originally read the idea and therefore have to commit the blogging sin of not referring readers to your source.
So don't get your undies in a bundle, I swear I'm not trying to pass this idea off as my own. I know I saw it somewhere....

BUT IT WORKS!

This cute little piece had not only paint, but some sort of stick-on paper.  I know there's technical term for that but opening a new window up to google it sounds like too much work at the moment.  My fingers are flying over these keys and it would break my stride.  It's the stuff you line your kitchen drawers with. CONTACT PAPER! Yeah, that.  After I peeled that off, then I hit the layer of paint. Two layers, actually.

So here we go folks.  Here's what you need.
Dollar General plastic wrap, because there's no need to spend more money than necessary on Saran. And stripper? Yo dawg, I couldn't do that if my booty was in debt a million dollars. (Why doesn't it say "paint stripper"??) So really, I've never bought a new jug of stripper in my life.  If you hit up those estate sales where the adult kids are selling everything grandpa saved for the last sixty-eight years in that perfect work shop in his basement, you can get things like stripper for a quarter.  Sometimes free, if the metal on top is rusty like this one. Same goes for metal scrapers.

So after you pour the stripper and spread it over the area you want stripped, cover it all in saran  Dollar General Clear plastic wrap and let it sit for fifteen minutes.  I have no idea how long I let it sit actually.  But people like an exact number when reading tutorials because they're brains are wired differently than mine so I'll say fifteen. It doesn't have to be perfectly smooth or anything, just so air isn't getting on it.

By now it should be a goopy mess, kinda like the slime that your kid made in the guest bathroom which you didn't discover until you needed the corn starch which you found after turning the house upside down, in the bathtub, where slime has spread out all over and is seeping down the drain....

So just take a metal scraper and start sliding that stuff off like jello.  I keep an old cottage cheese container or something in my other hand to scrape it into, and a rag handy to clean off the edge of the putty knife.  (Putty knife, scraper, credit card, whatever straight edge it is you're using).

The problem I always run into (and I'm still not sure of the best way to deal with it) is all the paint that can seep down into the cracks of the wood.  Sometimes it REALLY seeps in, and even sanding the daylights out of it, doesn't always get it all. I tend to slap an appealing title on it like "beautiful imperfections" or "character in the chaos". Oh wait, is that the name of some book trying to tell me that my kids not having the perfect pinterest party and me showing up at school with disastrous hair means I'm actually an AMAZING mom and it's OKAY not to have it ALL together???  Whatever.  It actually means I'm being lazy and REALLY DON'T WANT TO SPEND SEVEN MORE HOURS on this cute little piece of furniture!!

Seriously though, ISN'T IT CUTE?!!!!!  And for me, the best part is I didn't have to get different knobs for it!  Notice I didn't say "new"knobs... cuz I don't do "new".  Ever. I loved these crystal knobs and how they show off on the fresh coat of black.  And that imperfect gorgeous wood top is just my thing.

Now, if you like this idea, here's an image for you to pin on your Pinterest board.  And please do, because I think I spent the same amount of time making this graphic as I did taking the paint off the top of that little antique cabinet.

Thanks for stopping by, and let me know if you've ever tried this!
