Beachy Vibe Dresser

My mother dear is the best. She sees little dressers like this for a few dollars at a garage sale and she snags them for me, even though she has to bring it 500 miles to get to me! :) Maybe it's her excuse to see the grandkids.  Maybe.

When I stashed all of these wood dowels upstairs in my workshop, I had no idea I would end up using them in so many different ways - especially for drawer pulls!

I had to break one of my rules about "buying new" because I really wanted to try using these metal "two hole straps". What on earth, I was in Lowes looking everywhere for these, I didn't know to say "Hey sir, can you tell me where the Two-Hole Straps are? Something tells me Mr. Lowes Dude wouldn't even know what I was talking about. It took lots of aisle wandering before I found them.

I used some wood glue on the back of the dowels too, because some of the clamps ended up a little loosey-goosey and I didn't want them sliding out so big brother could use them on a little sibling. Just kidding. I don't care. That's what makes younger siblings so tough. Uhhh... just kidding again.

I found a piece of wood trim and cut it to fit across the bottom. I keep every piece of wood - just in case! And there's always eventually a "just in case!" I mean if I have the room (sheds and barns).... why not hoard all the things? It's what keeps me out of the hardware stores!

I used different shades of grays and blues, mixing them together and adding tans... The stencil on the top drawer was just one of those cheap all-over stencils you get in the big packs at Walmart. The annoying ones that you have to punch out the whole design and not rip any while you're at it since they're made out of tagboard. It's worth it though, they're cheap and I use them a lot!

So I loved how it turned out, but it didn't sell at my huge two-day barn sale. It was still in my barn a few weeks ago when one of my sweet Airbnb guests asked if she could take a peek inside the big old building. She spotted this and thought her daughter would love it. She packed it into the back of her little Prius and drove it 530 miles home, where her daughter welcomed it with open arms. Yay!

Trash 2 Treasure With Just Paint And A Stencil

A pal of mine was in the local resale shop when he found this for $6, thinking it was destined to end up on the trash pile, he couldn't leave it be.  He called me, asking if I could work my magic on it so he could give it to his girlfriend to put plants on. I suggested he leave the sweet sentiments on the table.... she might find them romantic. His name isn't Jaeden, and hers isn't Blake James, so maybe that's why he wasn't cool with that?

The only direction I had to go off was "She loves blue. Not aqua blue or turquoise, BLUE".
And I instantly had a vision in my head....

Now don't even ASK what this paint color is because I'm just going to show you this now:

I rarely know my paint colors because I mix my own or get mistints. And I'll bet you money even after saying that I'll still get a message asking what color of blue I used! People just look at pictures these days. Including me.

This stencil couldn't have worked out more perfectly. Perfect size-wise. I measured to find the exact middle and worked my way out towards the ends.

It's easy to use because it has the extra corner cut-outs to make it easy to line up your next spot.

And here's the finished product:

Fugly to Fabulous PLUS stenciled drawer knobs!

I've racked my brain and can't come up with where I got this end table from.  As in I have NO recollection of acquiring this piece.  I can't imagine I paid a dime for it... so it must have been on a curb somewhere. Which reminds me, if I had ten bucks every time someone tagged me in this meme on social media....

I might actually be able to afford new furniture.  🤣
(But really, where's the fun in that?!)

So this was an easy flip - painted it white using Valspar's expensive stuff that I can't remember the name of.  Oh there I go again forgetting stuff.  And then came the knobs... those dangly little original guys were interesting.  I thought about painting them black.  BUT... meh.  I've had some cool wood square ones taking up space in my drawer and got a little idea!

Such an easy way to make some sweet designer-ish pulls! I sanded the finish off the knobs, painted them gray, and then used just part of a stencil design.  The trick for something small like a knob is to use a design with thin lines so it won't look bulky and cheap.  Well that's what my non designer mind thinks anyway - for what it's worth.

Drum roll for the "after".....

Ain't she CUTE now??
I'll have this for sale at my barn sale November 6 and 7th - STAY TUNED!

Where my pinners at??
I made this graphic just for your board! :)

Dixie Belle Chalk Paint: Faux Tile Floor At The Parma Antique Mall

I've got a fun paint project to share!
The new stairway in the Parma Antique Mall is an eye catcher.  However, the landing on the new stairs was not!
Like it needed something! Bad! Well something... is my thing.

Let's take a look at the nice paint-splattered plywood on the landing, shall we?

Yeah.... no.  We can do better than that.
And I had to look no farther than 30 feet away... to the little nook where Doug Moe (Owner of the Parma Antique Mall) sells the Dixie Belle line of paint!  I'm spontaneous.  So no standing and staring at paint color swatches and hemming and hawing over the right shade of brown.  Coffee Brown and Mud Puddle looked perfect to me so I grabbed them off the shelf, ripped off the plastic seal and shook them on my way to the landing.

After burning 1,242 calories scrubbing the daylights out of the plywood with some soapy water, I covered the whole area with the Coffee Brown.  It went on smooth (as smooth as can be on a somewhat grooved surface), it dried in less than half an hour, and was ready for a second coat without me needing the hairdryer I brought.

The second coat took a tad longer to dry, but the birds in the cuckcoo clocks kept me company.
You ever been in an antique mall after hours?  Yeah. Creepy weird.

Let's break down the materials used in this project:

2 foam rollers
small trim brush
wet rag for mistakes
Dixie Belle Coffee Bean and Mud Puddle *
Dixie Bell Satin Clear Coat*
Dixie Bell chip brush*

*items that can be purchased in stock at the Parma Antique Mall

I am an "eye ball" it kind of girl, so this tile-look stencil required a little more perfection than I'm used to.  Did I get it lined up totally perfectly?  No.  Did I have to scrub a few "tiles" off, repaint the dark undercoat and start fresh?  Yes.

The MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER WHEN STENCILING:
Minimal amount of paint!  Like we're talking you want an almost DRY foam roller here, Pals.  After dipping my roller, I roll as much excess paint off as I can in a separate container. An ice cream bucket lid or similar works great for this.   You want to have to use some force to get paint out when rolling over the stencil.  If you don't?  I guarantee you IT WILL BLEED.

Cutting Edge makes it easy... just make sure your first two are square and you should be good to go.  Should be... I'm blaming my less-than-perfect lines on the lining up my first few with the unsquare wall.  Old buildings... hey it ain't shocking.

The next morning I used a chip brush to apply Dixie Belle's Clear Coat in Satin.  The second coat took awhile to dry so we had to close off the main stairway to customers.  Thankfully there's a back staircase.

You can buy the Santa Ana stencil from Cutting Edge Stencil HERE.

Thanks for stopping by the Korner today!

And make sure you head to the Parma Antique Mall downtown Parma, Michigan to check out the Dixie Bell Paint line!
Not to mention all of the other treasures and deals of course!
Coffee is always on, cold pops are in the fridge, and friendly faces to greet you.

Easy Tile-Look Back Splash {Plus Before and Afters of Tenant House #2}

So this is in one of our rental properties on our "estate".  It was in yucky shape when we got it!
Do you see what the nicotine does to walls in a house???  Those walls were white at one time:

This is after SCRUBBING the walls before coating it with Kilz!
Seriously, smokers!  If you don't care about your lungs, at least care about your walls.
Uhhh.....?

Anyways, this post isn't really about how yellowed the walls were from cigarette smoke.
It's about a back splash!  I had painted it a light gray, but really wanted to do more with it.  So when the first tenants moved out, I grabbed my  moroccan stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils because it has a "tile look" to it and used a darker gray paint and a foam roller.

When I was done with the stencil, it still looked unfinished to me.
So I found a piece of white trim leftover from who-knows-what project and cut it to fit under the cabinets.  I used my handy cordless Ryobi nail gun to secure it to the wall.

See how just adding a piece of trim can really make something look finished?

This project was super easy and if you get tired of it, all you have to do is paint over it!
Forget trying to tear off old tiles or remove glue in a decade....  win win!

While we're here in the little "Tenant House's East Side" how about a few more before/after pics for fun?
